Back pain can have a wide variety of causes. Our expert physiotherapy staff can work with you to determine the cause of the problem and to develop a treatment and management plan.
Treatment
Our first priority is hands on treatment to address the pain, stiffness and muscle tightness that occurs due to pain.
Our second priority is to make sure you regain strength and muscle balance so you return to full function without recurring back issues.
Pain = deconditioning
Back pain tends to “turn off” the trunk supporting muscles due to neuro inhibition. Chronic back pain is often accompanied by loss of optimal function in trunk supporting and gluteal and hip muscles. When you become weak you lose support for your spine and reinjury and further pain is often likely. Overusing and overloading other muscles can occur and this leads to spasms, further imbalances and more pain.
Break the back pain cycle with a detailed musculoskeletal assessment of spine and trunk musculature to identify your weaknesses, and allow us to design your rehabilitation plan.
Rehab can be started early to refire those inhibited muscles.
Back surgery- we can start gentle strengthening with Pilates soon after surgery.
Rehab sequencing
Clinical Pilates is our first choice to get those deep muscles firing and coming in to play as you move.
Clinical Pilates is famous for core stability for beginners, through to providing challenging exercises for dancers and athletes. The best thing about Pilates in the early stages is that it doesn’t load the spinal joints and discs so you can exercise without pain.
After a thorough assessment our Clinical Pilates trained physiotherapy staff design you a client specific program and take you though this as a one on one 2,3-4 times. This ensures that the program of exercises is your best fit and helps you to learn equipment set up and exercise form so you can transfer to group supervised programs where you still focus on your program with some supervision.
Your program is periodically upgraded to continue to challenge your strength and ensure you reach your optimum level of strength and function.
